Earth Day at the LFM
It’s our mama’s B-Earthday!

With the kinds of standard growing and cooking practices commonly used throughout the Lexington Farmer’s Market, it is truly “Earth Day” every day for us. Truth be told, our weakness is that we don’t always remember to  shout it from the rooftops (Since there’s always so much to talk about!).  I guess there are worse offenses…

Did you know that…
Our vendors specialize in #zerowaste (cooking/growing/eating) practices?
Many of our farmers have decades of knowledge, and regularly practice #regenerative #restorative #sustainable methods of living, extending to farming, and feeding and housing their animals safely, and naturally.

After decades of practice and experience, they KNOW how to read and feed the soil’s composition, raise pastured, GMO-free animals and eggs, and refute the “big Ag” earth-scorching, mono-cropping, disease-causing practices that put profit over planet and people.

We thank all our farmers for their #greenpractices #deepknowledge #creativereuse #recycling and even #upcycling projects and we are just tickled to see everyone else get in on the act, too!  We are glad you’re with us!!  For YOUR next level, come to market to enjoy the #launch of Refill Rockbridge and learn how they can help you tread more lightly on Mother Earth.

Next, after much missing of our very own croissants, we can finally CONFIRM CROISSANTS will once again be a regular part of the market, including other “laminated” pastries, over at the Conifer Breads booth.
Anything that has all those gazillion layers of airy, flaky, buttery dough layers falls under that category… but, yeah, croissants are back starting THIS WEEK!!

And now, on to our weekly feature, come learn about one of our market vendors in the Producer’s Spotlight Corner:

Angelika is a local Master Gardener and the brains, brawn & beauty behind Blumen Garten Designs.
In a word, her booth is truly the perfect feature for Earth Day.

Angelika has had her cheerful booth at the LFM since 2010. Hers is the booth exploding with small, carefully curated bouquets and centerpieces from her own garden, native plants, flowering lavender plants, bouquets and an assortment of her own line of bodycare products, often utilizing her own Lavender.

What is different at her booth is the number of hugs and smiles exchanged there. Oftentimes vendors’ booths are extensions of their own personalities, and in this case, hers is no exception, overflowing with pretty, and sweet smelling items, many of which are living native plants and flowers.  All of which are smile-giving things>

Part of any Master Gardeners’ role is to promote environmentally responsible horticultural practices, such as using native plants, attracting pollinators and avoiding pesticides. The master gardener training mandates sharing of knowledge within the local community, spanning a wide range of topics, including botany, soil science, pest management, and preventing/remediating of plant diseases.  Angelika does all this and more, typically providing a solid foundation for confident gardening practices at community events, but she does this of great cheer at her market booth any Wednesday.

Why should you care?
Native plants are not invasive, hardy to their own environment, far easier to care for, and they thrive in partnership with insects and birds, overall requiring less care and resources.

Overall , isn’t that exactly the base formula for being kind to Mother Earth?!
